Eating Healthy While Traveling

One of the hardest elements of traveling is maintaining a healthy diet.

Eating healthy while traveling is probably one of the first things to go out the window when we get on that plane! Or in that car, bus. or boat. It really depends on what kind of traveling you’re doing.

In my years of traveling and camping, my body has been the victim of much unhealthy eating and unhealthy habits. Which is why I have decided to write this article.

Granted, the tips I will share with you for eating healthy while traveling don’t always apply AND sometimes, you just gotta indulge in the food around you! And there is nothing wrong with that. But to protect yourself from parasites and unnecessary weight gain, I have made some tips.

My first and grandest tip of eating healthy while traveling is…. *Drumroll*

Go grocery shopping! Depending on what kind of travel you are doing, don’t buy a weeks worth of food. Buy enough for a day or two with some healthy snacks and you won’t be as tempted to buy junk food.

I believe this will work universally for all, because as long as you prepare a little bit in advance, you can take healthy snacks with you anywhere!

But be sure to wash things like apples and carrots thoroughly. I got parasites from traveling once because I was not careful with stuff like this.

Prepare meals where you stay

Like I said above, sometimes you’ve just got to indulge in the food around you, but preparing your owns meals helps budget and keeps you eating healthy.

When eating out…

Walk to the restaurant. Walk away from restaurants.

Cut down on fancy cocktails and drinking alcohol.

Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water before a meal. (And all day really)

Avoid deserts after every meal. But again, indulge sometimes.

Wash your hands!

Appreciate the ambiance around you, it’ll help you slow down eating. I do this because I eat fast otherwise.

Eat like the Spanish… basically move restaurant to restaurant and eat a little in each one.

I hope these pointers help you continue eating healthy on your trips!

And remember, you can’t always do this, but at least you can always try!
