What To Pack For Yellowstone In The Winter

It can be tricky to know what to pack for West Yellowstone, Montana. And furthermore, what to pack for a trip into Yellowstone National Park in the winter. In this article I will give you a basic list of what to pack for Yellowstone in the winter.

Before I go into too much detail about this, you need to know that it get’s ridiculously cold in West Yellowstone. The high is from 26-30 degrees Fahrenheit and the low is around 5 degrees. When I lived there it got so cold that my car froze and I couldn’t drive anywhere for a full day. And if you’re planning a snowmobiling trip, you’ll definitely want to bring all this stuff with you.

Yellowstone National Park can be colder. So if you are planning a trip there, you have to dress warm and in layers.

Now that we have that cleared up, let’s get you a basic packing list!

  • Wool socks. I like Smartwool. They’re warm and comfy.
  • Base layers. Eddie Bauer has excellent base layers.
  • A good fleece. I’m still searching for my favorite brand.
  • A good vest. puffy or fleece. Whatever you prefer.
  • A jacket rated for the cold (Eddie Bauer has awesome coats), if it has a shell, that’s even better.
  • Water proof, insulated gloves. Or wool gloves.
  • Winter boots. I prefer Sorrels
  • A warm scarf.
  • A buff for your face. I like the Buff brand.
  • A warm hat.
  • Sunglasses. I love my Smiths!
  • Warm insulated pants. Waterproof is an added bonus.

I wouldn’t bring less than this. You really don’t want to feel the cold that intimately. You can definitely bring more, though, if you wish! As my dad always says…

It’s better to be over prepared than under prepared.

Tom Toronto, my dad

I hope you have a wonderful time exploring the winter wonderland that is Yellowstone!
